Planning: Initial Ideas Front cover

Planning: Initial Ideas For My Music Magazine

Below shows an image my initial ideas for my music magazine. I have thought of many ideas which relates to the colour schemes I would like to include, types of fonts, and names for my magazine. While, thinking of all of these convections I also had to bear in mind the target audience and the genre of my magazine, which is Pop.

Mind map for my music magazine.

Research and Planning:

Research and Planning:

For this part of research I decided to look at existing pop music magazine such as Top of the Pops magazine with Selena Gomez featured on the cover. By looking at these convections I decided it would be relevant to create my own preliminary pop magazine, as it would help me understand what does/doesn't work for my final cover.

An existing pop magazine.
For research and planning I was able to practise my indesign skills and create a pop music magazine. I have included some relevant colours and cover lines that you would typically find on these types of magazine.
I have also included an image of Selena Gomez who is in the pop music industry and someone you would normally be featured in magazines.

My own preliminary music cover.

Research: My chosen Genre

Research: My chosen Genre

For my music magazine I have decided on my genre of music I would like to include. After lots of research I have decided to base my magazine on Chart Music/Popular Music.

Chart Music-
Is the broad range of music rangeing from pop to rock and takes on more specific connoations.
Chart music specifically is the range of musical artists such as the following below. I have also included their own music videos to show the difference of sound yet still under the genre of pop. This also helps me to research some of the connotations I can include in my magazine such as clothing, colour scheme, and the audience it appeals to.

Ellie Golding: Music Video

Bruno Mars: Music Video

Research- Double Page Spread

Research- Double Page Spread

This is a image of my research into double page spreads of the music magazine, Vibe. I have analysed and described what features and convections are included within the article.

The double page spread has featured Bruno Mars, a successful singer/songwriter in the charts. I decided to use this  article as his music is relevant to the genre I would like to use and consist of while creating my music magazine.

I also conducted my own research for a typical pop contents page which could benefit me when I create mine. This helped me to demonstrate that I understand the convections of music magazine covers. This contents page was taken from Top of the Pops Magazine.

Genres and their target Audience-

Rock:
Rock music is a popular genre of music which was first originated as 'rock and roll' in the 1950s. Rock and can be put into sub-caterogries such as Folk Rock, Indie Rock and Heavy Rock. The stereotypical target audience for rock would normally be someone aged between 16-28 years old, mainly male. However today there is a wide target audience for rock music as it is so popular and consist of different styles.
The stereotypical clothing a rock listener would wear would be black clothes and/or make up with leather and chains. Other things that make rock music its own is:
  • Skinny Jeans
  • Ripped clothing
  • Piercings
An example of this would be:

This is a good example of a rock music listener as it shows their black ripped clothes and other fans in the background also displaying the stereotypical target audience.
Pop:
Pop music is also a genre of popular music which is deprived form rock and roll, in the 1950S. Pop music has a large fan base and success as it has a large input and dominates the music chart. Although, pop music has more of a larger target audience, they be more choosy due to the style coming under sub genres. For example artists such as Bruno Mars would has a wider target audience to compared Justin Bieber whose fans are more teenage girls. Other examples of pop are:
  • Over the top
  • Bold
  • Colourful and bright
An Example of a pop fan would be:

This image shows two teenage girls who are screaming in excitement. this is a good example as it shows the extremities that a person would go to see their idol. However, this is not a clear representation of all pop fans.
Indie:
Indie is a genre of alternative rock founded in the united Kingdom. It is also divided into sub genres such as indie pop and jangle pop. Indie rock also reffers to being punk and grunge type music. Indie music has a target audience of both male and female with it being more common of those aged between 16-30 years old.
Indie music has only recentally been discovered in the eighties with it becoming more popular and succesful in the charts. This means an indie artist is normally starting small with their target audience but throughout their carreer gained a stronger following. However overall each artist/band is still small compared to those in chart music.
A sterotypical image of an indie listener would be like someone below:

However other features they could show would be:
  • Printed/colourful shirts
  • Coloured hair which is normally messy.
  • Grunge, festival look.

Country:
Country music is a popular American genre of popular music that originated in southern America in the 1930s.Country music often conists of ballards and dance tunes. The main target audience of country music would be both male and females aged between 25-60. I think that country music is mainly enjoyed by those older aged however in the southern countries is also seen like being chart  music so many ages would probably enjoy it.

This image shows a sterotypical image of someone who would listen to country music as they wear cowboy hats and chequard shirts. Other characterists could be:
  • Bikinis and short clothing.
  • A fair or carnival.

Music Magazine Mind Map

Music Magazine Mind Map

Below is a screen grabbed image of my mind map which shows some convections and features I will include and consider while creating my Music Magazine.

Music Magazine Mind Map.

The mind map also shows existing magazines and features they have included. This could be useful as I could contain some of these features myself to help produce a professional looking magazine.
This image also shows that I have already started to plan and consider the style of the font and colours I think could be used.
